Announcing IXON’s first GitHub project: Tableau (BI) connector

The ecosystem surrounding IXON is rapidly expanding. We’ve recently activated our GitHub account, where we’re currently working on providing integrations for a bunch of different BI tools. This will allow you to further analyse data in the comfort of your favourite analytics programme. Our first completed project is the Tableau connector.

At IXON, we believe in the power of all-in-one solutions. It’s why we’ve built drag-and-drop custom dashboards right into the IXplatform for easy machine data visualisation. However, each use case has its own desires, issues and approach. Although we do our best to incorporate all these desires into a universal solution for every machine builder, some cases may ask for a different approach.

IXON Tableau-WDC

My fellow developers and I have worked hard to create our very own Tableau-WDC. It’s a new tool which allows you to move IXON Cloud Logging data into Tableau, a Business Intelligence tool. Tableau excels at data visualisation and provides users with additional ways to visualize their machine data, giving you even more insights into the data that we extract from your machines.

In order to achieve this, we use Tableau’s Web Data Connector system. This allows us to feed the Tableau application with custom machine data through a web-based user interface. After the machine data is imported, Tableau will allow you to use this data exactly as if you were importing data directly from your machine. A simple click on Tableau’s sync button will get you fresh new data from the IXplatform, or you can even automatically sync this process. You determine which data is imported and how you wish to visualize it.

How can I import my data?

To use the Tableau-WDC, you’ll need a license for Tableau Desktop, one of the services that Tableau offers. Upon opening Tableau Desktop, you can select a Data Source to connect to. For our IXON Tableau-WDC you’ll want to click “More…” under “To a Server”, and then select “Web Data Connector” as the Data Source. This opens up a window that looks a bit like your average browser. In the URL bar, enter the Tableau-WDC URL and hit enter. This opens the Tableau-WDC page where you’ll be able to login with your email and password.

When logged in a page will open like the one shown in the image above. Here you’ll be able to select which company, agents and tags you want to import. When you’re done configuring the import settings, you can click “submit” which will start the importing process.

Now go get yourself a drink. This may take a while.

After Tableau has done its magic you’re ready to start working with the data. You can even bring together data from multiple IXrouters into one dashboard.

Making it open source

We’ve aimed at creating a universal tool that anyone can use to export data from IXON to Tableau. However, users may want to alter the IXON Tableau-WDC to make it fit better with their specific use case. To make this possible we decided to publish IXON’s Tableau-WDC on GitHub as an open source project under the MIT license. This means that it’s open for anyone who wishes to further modify and distribute the tool, as long as you provide a copy of the MIT license to anyone using it. Found an issue? Great! That means we can improve our Tableau-WDC tool. Feel free to let us know on the GitHub repository.

Get in touch!

Are you looking to get your own version up and running? You’ll need an Application ID, which we can provide to you upon request. To use IXON’s Tableau-WDC, users will also need to host their own version. If you’d like us to manage an official version, please get in touch with us.
