Machine data logging in the IXON CloudHow your data is stored and secured

Machine data is generated by the activity of machines. Prime examples of machine data are data collected by sensors, such as weight or temperature, and machine logs. Collecting machine data can benefit machine builders in many ways. Gaining insight into your machines allows you, among others, to optimize machine efficiency and even predict when maintenance will be needed.

With IXON’s Cloud Logging, you have all the tools available for safely collecting, storing and visualising machine data.

Logging machine data in the cloud

How IXON transports and stores machine data in the cloud? The IXrouter extracts data from the machine in real time. Based on the chosen formula (log on interval, log on change, or log on trigger), the IXrouter stores values in its temporary memory. There, each data value is marked with a timestamp (based on the IXrouter’s internal clock) and synchronization status. A built-in reader checks the synchronization status of the values and sends unsynchronized data to the IXON Cloud when there’s an active internet connection and then updates the synchronization status.

When there’s no internet connection, all unsynchronized logging data will be stored in the IXrouter’s 8GB memory. This allows data to be logged offline for weeks at a time. Storing data on the IXrouter is useful for situations where there is no internet available, such as on a ship or when your 4G connection fails. As soon as an active internet connection is available again, the IXrouter will send the data to the IXON Cloud.

Machine data is sent to the IXON Cloud using the lightweight and highly efficient MQTT protocol. This protocol uses an MQTT broker: a central station for receiving and sending data messages. After the IXrouter collects the data, it is first passed to our MQTT broker. There it is time stamped using the NTP protocol, and stored in a temporary database. Next, a time correction is applied to account for any possible discrepancies between the IXrouter’s internal clock and the NTP time (actual time). Finally, the data is stored in a time series database, which is hosted in an ISO 27001 certified data center in Frankfurt, Germany. The main advantage of a time series database is that it’s optimised for handling timestamped data. This allows users to request data over a large period of time in just a few milliseconds and allows for advanced data lifecycle management options, such as aggregation or downsampling of your machine data.

Keeping your machine data secure

Access to your machine data is highly restricted, so only authorized users of your company are able to view this. A user first has to log in to the IXON Cloud platform to gain access to the data of the user’s company. Next, a user needs permission to access that specific IXrouter before being able to view the associated machine data.

To make sure your machine data remains safe, we transport the data using TLS 1.2 (or higher) encrypted connections. All our servers and databases are monitored 24/7 and backups of your machine data are created every hour. In addition, IXON has an ISO 27001 certified information security management system (ISMS) in place, which proves that we uphold the highest industry standards for protecting the confidentiality, integrity and availability of your data.
