IXON proudly sponsors connectivity for RoboHub Eindhoven’s autonomous robot Suii

IXON is a proud sponsor of RoboHub Eindhoven, a team of students and recent graduates who engage in anything robotic. “We help other students or companies with robot problems or help them take the first step towards automation,” says Ruben Arts, co-founder of RoboHub Eindhoven.

This July 2-8, they will be competing in the RoboCup@Work league as part of the RoboCup 2019 in Sydney, Australia. Be sure to check out RoboHub Eindhoven’s LinkedIn page to stay up-to-date on their achievements!

Competing in an international robotics challenge

The RoboCup is an international organisation working to “promote robotics and AI research, by offering a publicly appealing, but formidable challenge.” RoboCup@Work, in which the RoboHub Eindhoven team will be participating, is the newest league of the competition and targets the use of robots in the logistics and industrial sectors.

“You have to be able to drive an autonomous robot with dynamic obstacle avoidance and object recognition for grabbing items with a robotic arm,” Ruben explains about the competition. “Our newest robot, Sui2 (or Suii) is an autonomous driving machine with an industrial collaborative robot arm on top. It can navigate an unknown, dynamic environment using laser scanners, a robotic arm with a 3D camera system and Deep Learning algorithm YOLO for object recognition.”

IXON provides the heart of the machine

During the RoboCup competition, Sui2 has to listen to a referee computer that gives the robot tasks to complete like ‘Pick M20 bolt from workbench 10.’ The team controls the robot arm over a TCP/IP-interface via the IXrouter that IXON sponsored. Why is this connectivity so important? “A malfunction or delay can lead to a miscalculated position in the robot’s brain, meaning it could hit a wall or person,” Ruben states.

He goes on to explain: “We also need to constantly monitor and control the robot arm to make adjustments according to the most recent data.” While Sui2’s computer operates as the machine’s brain, IXON is “the heart of the machine”. It must guide all information flows in the right direction and at high speeds.

“We use IXON because the router is reliable and compact,” Ruben declares. The compact IXrouter fits perfectly in the limited space the Sui2 provides and the communication in- and outside the robot has been faultless. “We’re very pleased that IXON aided in the realisation of our robot,” Ruben finishes.

On behalf of everyone at IXON, we’d like to wish RoboHub Eindhoven the best of luck during the RoboCup in Sydney!
